If you don’t have an Australian Business Number (ABN), you may be eligible to provide a completed Statement by Supplier form along with your invoice instead. This will ensure you can be paid in full without an ABN, and not withheld. Withholding is when a payer is required to withhold 47% of your invoice because you didn’t supply an ABN when you needed to. This is why the Statement by a Supplier form is beneficial.

Some of the reasons you may be eligible to use a Statement by Supplier form instead of an ABN include:

  • You are under 18 and making less than $350 per week
  • The payment does not exceed $75
  • The service or products you provide are part of a hobby or recreational pursuit

The supplier can use this form to justify the payer not withholding from the payment to the supplier

If you’re invoicing a business and don’t have an ABN, the payer is required to withhold 46.5% of your payment. If it’s early on in your enterprise and you choose not to get an ABN you can avoid the withholding of payment by providing a Statement By Supplier form.
