Yarning SafeNStrong helpline for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Yarning SafeNStrong is a dedicated free and confidential counselling service for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples run by the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). You can call Yarning SafeNStrong if you are feeling like you want to talk to someone because you are feeling down or you just feel like having a yarn. VAHS have counsellors you can yarn safely with and who can also support you to access extra help with financial wellbeing, counselling, drug & alcohol counselling & rehab services and medical help including COVID19 testing.

LIFT Stepped Care Model for Mental Health 
LIFT is a free service that ensures every person seeking help with a mental health concern receives the right care at the right time for the right person. LIFT provides expert support from mental health nurses, psychologists and counsellors via online, face to face, group support and telephone. LIFT is available to people who live, work or study in the Banyule, Whittlesea, Nillumbik and surrounding areas who are not able to afford or access similar services.

Northern Crisis Assessment & Treatment Team

The North East Crisis Assessment & Treatment Service (NECATS) provides a mobile, responsive and accessible assessment service and intensive community based treatment to consumers experiencing a serious psychiatric illness in acute crisis as an alternative to hospitalisation, where possible.

CATS is a 24-hour, 7 days a week team of mental health professionals who provide urgent assessment and short-term intensive treatment to people in crisis due to mental illness. The service will organise a hospital admission if necessary.

Mental Health Care Plans 

A Mental Health Care Plan is a special referral from your GP that entitles you up to 10 annual subsidised sessions of psychotherapy billed to Medicare. To get a Mental Health Care Plan you just need to do the following things:

  1. Book a double appointment with your local GP (a total of 30min)

  2. Ask your GP for a Mental Health Care Plan

  3. Your GP will make a referral to a counsellor or psychologist, then all you have to do is make the appointment

At Headspace Collingwood you can receive support from a range of professionals including youth workers, intakes & assess workers, GP’s, psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, social workers, mental health nurses, and alcohol and other drug workers. These workers are skilled in listening to young people and can help you identify problems, goals and achieve creative solutions to issues.

The Mental Health Community Intake service is a central access point for people with a severe mental illness, their carers and family, and referrers seeking community mental health services. All referrals or enquiries relating to community mental health services should be made to the dedicated telephone line (This is not a crisis service).

Northern Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA)
Northern CASA is the regional sexual assault service for the northern metropolitan region of Melbourne covering the local government areas of Banyule, Darebin, Nillumbik and Whittlesea. It is located on the Repatriation Campus of Austin Health and also operates a number of outposts in the Northern region.

ISN Clinic – Heidelberg
They offer generalist counselling services through a mental health care plan (with the Medicare rebate). This clinic is free, as the counsellors are final year University students who are studying psychology. The sessions are recorded for supervision. There are no limits to how many sessions people can access through the clinic.
